What does a visit to the Kumbh Mela involve?
Nashik and Trimbakeshwar are two separate towns, about 30 km apart by the direct road, and a pilgrim’s visit usually touches both — the general public bathes at ghats along the Godavari in Nashik, and the Shaiva and Udasin akhadas bathe at Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar. Reaching either town comes first: the airport, the railway station, the highways and the state bus stands each leave you some distance from the ghats, and that distance decides your last leg.
Once you are in Nashik or Trimbakeshwar, the shape of your day depends on whether it falls on or near a bathing day. On an ordinary day the ghats are easy to reach. On a shahi snan day, and the two days either side of it, no vehicle reaches the ghats — you park well outside the mela area and walk the last stretch on foot, through the largest crowd anywhere in the mela.

Work out your arrival first. The airport, the train and the road each land you a different distance from the ghats, so the mode you choose decides the last leg of the trip. Next, check whether your visit falls on or near a bathing day: the two days either side of each shahi snan bring the biggest crowds, and the parking, the shuttle and the walk in are all arranged differently from an ordinary day.
