What is Narayan Nagbali?
A rite performed by a purohit at Trimbakeshwar. A पुरोहित purohit is the priest who performs a rite for a family and makes the offerings in the family’s name. Narayan is a name of Vishnu, and a बलि bali is an offering.

What is Narayan bali?
An offering to Vishnu, made for the dead. The Agni Purana names it as a rite for the dead who have fallen from the right way of living. It says the rite should be done with great compassion for them. A ब्राह्मण brahmin is a person of the priestly class, and a संन्यासी sannyasi is a person who has given up household life. The Śiva Purāṇa gives Narayan bali a place in the rites of the eleventh day after a sannyasi’s death. There it follows the gifts to the brahmins and the offering of पिण्ड pinda, the balls of cooked rice offered to the dead. It is made at the same place on the same day, with the worship of Vishnu.
